Beware of Phishing Fraud Schemes

While Phishing has been around since early 1996, there appears to be a major increase in recent months throughout the Internet with this type of identity theft. Phishing Fraud Schemes (also known as spoof schemes or fake websites) occur when thieves trick people into providing their Social Security Numbers, financial account numbers, credit card numbers, PIN numbers, mother's maiden names, website login information and other personal information. They then use the information for financial gain or sell the information to others. Phishing is primarily perpetrated via e-mail and websites, and according to recent research.... 1 out of every 25 persons on the Internet today may have already provided sensitive information to the Phishing thieves.

Here's how Phishing works: You receive an e-mail from an organization with which you do business, such as a financial institution, credit card company, utility company, Internet Service Provider, online retailer or government agency. The e-mail typically includes bogus appeals such as problems with your account or billing errors, and asks you to confirm your personal information. To encourage potential victims to act immediately, the e-mail usually threatens that the account could be closed or cancelled. Most e-mails ask recipients to follow an embedded link that takes them to an exact copy of the victim company's website. This fake website looks exactly like the real thing even down to the wording and graphics. Phishing victims enter their personal information on the fake website and therefore into the hands of identity thieves. Some phishers also use the phone to hunt for personal information. Some, posing as employers, call or send e-mails to people who have listed themselves on job search websites.

7 Steps to Protect Yourself Against Phishing Fraud:

1) Be suspicious if someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks for your personal information. It's a warning sign that something is "phishy".

2) Do not click on links within e-mails that ask you to provide personal information. Many Phishing e-mails are designed to hide the actual link or make the domain name very similar to the real site. To check whether an e-mail or call is really from the company or agency, call the company directly or go directly to the company's website in a new browser window.

3) Job seekers should verify the person's identity before providing personal information to someone claiming to be a prospective employer.

4) If someone contacts you via phone or e-mail and says that you've been a victim of fraud, verify the person's identity before you provide any personal information.

5) Never open any attachment in an e-mail unless you are expecting it and can verify the sender.

6) Always keep your local anti-virus and anti-spam software up-to-date and ensure it is running.

7) It is important that we all understand Phishing in order to protect consumers from falling victim to Phishing schemes.
